Roadside Tragedies – Types and Statistics

The state of California is characterized by its long highways and high traffic. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the local police, car accidents and tragedies are becoming more common every day.

Here are some of the latest statistics on these types of accidents.

  • According to the annual death report of National Law Enforcement, during 2020, 44 officers were killed in traffic-related incidents. Of those accidents, 18 were automobiles that involved a collision with another vehicle, 8 were single-vehicle collisions, 15 were struck while on the side of the road, and three involved a motorcycle accident.
  • Deaths from traffic accidents decreased 5.1%, from 3,798 in 2018 to 3,606 in 2019 in California. The 2019 Mileage Death Rate (MDR) (deaths per 100 million miles driven) is 1.06.
  • Teen motor vehicle deaths (16 to 19 years old) decreased 25.2%, from 219 in 2018 to 164 in 2019. Teen driver deaths (16 to 19 years old) fell 12.7%, from 95 in 2018 to 83 in 2019.
